Installing JKSimBlast

If you have a previous version of JKSimBlast or any of the modules, it is recommended that you first backup any data and then uninstall the previous version. You should then install the new version, rather than simply copy the program files, because there may be differences in system files between the new and previous versions.If you have a recent version, it may be possible to just copy the program files (see below).

The installation program for JKSimBlast is used to install any or all of the modules, plus the drivers for the electronic security key. You have a choice to install either a complete system for Surface Blasting or Underground Blasting, or individual components (see Components and Packages in the JKSimBlast overview for more details).

You will need an appropriate license file to run the main modules of JKSimBlast - JKBMS, 2DBench, 2DRing, 2DFace, 2DView, Energy, 2DContour and TimeHEx. This file is supplied as part of the purchase of the software. Instructions for installing the license file are at the end of the installation instructions. The utility modules StockView, Import and Units do not require a security key or license file in order to operate.

These instructions are included in the manual, or you can switch back to these instructions while the installation is running. If you don't have a manual and you don't want to keep your browser running during the installation, print this page.

  1. Start the installation program
    To install all of the modules in JKSimBlast, you will need about 120MB of free space on your hard drive. This includes 45MB of temporary space for the install program. Installing only one module, such as 2DBench or 2DRing, requires about 90MB.

    To start the installation, run the program [CD]:\install\JKSimBlast\Setup_JKSimBlast_v2.exe. Alternatively, you can copy the install program to a hard drive and run it from there.

    Once the installation program starts, follow the on-screen instructions.

  2. Wait ...
    The install program will create a temporary folder on your hard drive to hold the extracted installation files. This is a very large file, so it could take a few minutes. For example, on a 500MHz computer running Windows 2000, the extraction takes about 1.5 minutes. Please be patient.

    Click [Next] to continue.

  3. License Agreement
    Click the button to accept the license agreement and proceed. A copy of the license agreement is on the disk, in the JKSimBlast install folder.

  4. Customer Information
    Enter your name and organisation, if they are not already shown. This is internal information only, for the operating system.

  5. Destination Folder
    Either accept the default installation folder, or click [Change] to select a new folder.

  6. Setup Type
    Select the type of installation:

    • to automatically install JKSimBlast for Surface Blasting, select the first option

    • to automatically install JKSimBlast for Underground Blasting, select the second option

    • for all other installations (including JKSimBlasting for Tunnel Blasting), select the third option Choose Components ...

    If in doubt, or if there are no restrictions on installation, all of the JKSimBlast modules can be installed using the third option. The license file determines which modules are permitted to operate, so that unlicensed modules will not be accessible. This will have no effect on the operation of the other modules.

    To install all components, select the third option, and do not make any changes on the next screen.

  7. Custom Setup
    Use the Custom Setup to install individual components. Note that the components StockView, Import and Units are always installed.

    To install JKSimBlast for Tunnel Blasting, select the components 2DFace, TimeHEx, 2DView and JKBMS.

    Select how and when to install each component (typically, always select the first option) ...

    For example, to install only 2DBench, the screen should look like this ...

  8. Ready to install
    The software is now ready to install. Check the details, and click [Install] to continue.

  9. HTML Help
    JKSimBlast uses HTML Help files for on-line help. The software for these is installed automatically with JKSimBlast. Although some operating systems may prevent this, it is usually because the HTML Help software is already installed. If any messages appear about HTML Help, take note of the message and then continue with the installation. Test the on-line help later, and if there are any problems, contact Soft-Blast.

B. License File

To complete the installation, copy the license file license.nfo to the main JKSimBlast folder (typically C:\Program Files\JKSimBlast). The license file contains details of which components are allowed to run with a particular electronic security key.

The license file should either be on the CD in the folder [CD]:\JKSimBlast, or supplied by email as an attachment. An installation CD is typically supplied with a temporary license file, as a security precaution. A temporary license will allow you to run the software a number of times or until the expiry date occurs. Contact Soft-Blast to obtain a permanent license.

If you do not have a license file, contact Soft-Blast. Include the name of your organisation, contact person and the serial number of your electronic security key.

Once the license file is in place, plug in the security key and start the software.

C. Updates and Replacements

If you have a recent installation of JKSimBlast, or if you need to replace a file in one of the JKSimBlast program folders, you can copy programs and files directly from the installation CD to the program folders on your computer.

The program is typically installed in C:\Program Files\JKSimBlast on your computer, and the CD contains a copy of the files and folders in the same layout, in the folder [CD]:\JKSimBlast. The File Structure below shows where the files are located. You can copy the files directly from the CD to your computer to update recent programs or replace files. This is also applicable for additional stocks databases or utility applications, such as spreadsheet tools, that can be used to supplement the functions and features in JKSimBlast

  • Fast Start-up
    On start-up 2DBench, 2DRing and 2DFace run an internal scan for the security key license details. This may take some time. Once completed, the programs save the key details in the initialisation file (*.ini), and this is used in a subsequent start-up to bypass the scan and start the program immediately.

    The program can be forced to conduct the scan by adding a command line switch to any shortcut for starting the program, including the Start menu. This may be necessary if a new security with a different code is used. Right click on the shortcut, and select Properties from the pop-up menu. At the end of the Target line, add /alllocal. For example:

        "C:\Program Files\JKSimBlast\2DBench\2DBench.exe" /alllocal

    Close the Properties, then restart the program from the shortcut.

    Alternatively, the program can be forced to use a particular key. Select Help-About, and note the code in square brackets at the bottom of the form, eg [G012]. Add /local=G012 to the end of the command line in any shortcut.

    To remove a code from the *.ini file, open the file in a text editor, search for the code and delete the entire line. Save the file and start the program.

    A full description of the command line options for security key is in the file documents\manuals\other\NewDongleCommandLineSwitches.pdf on the installation CD.

  • File Structure

    The program file structure for JKSimBlast is shown below. The JKSimBlast folders can be moved or duplicated if required, but the internal structure must be kept intact. Any shortcuts for starting programs, etc, will also need to be modified. Several system files (not shown here) are registered at installation and cannot be moved unless the Windows registry is updated.

    These files can also be found on the CD, and can be directly copied to replace lost or damaged files.

    D. Network Installation

    JKSimBlast can run from a network key. This is a different key from the one that is normally supplied with the software. The network key can be installed on any computer connected to the network.

    Unless otherwsie specified, the installation files referred in this section are on the installation CD in the folder [CD]:\install\Hardlock\, or can be downloaded from the Aladdin web site via the download links.

    Follow these steps to complete installation on a network.

    1. Install JKSimBlast on the client computers, as per the instructions above. This will install the Hardlock drivers at the same time, but under some circumstances (usually related to Administrator rights) this is not successful. If not, run the manual installation program hldrv32.exe. [download, Jan-07, 4.82MB]

      The TimeHEx program has a different version for running across a network - copy the file [CD]:\JKSimBlast\Analysis\Timing\TimeHEx_NET.exe to the same folder in the installation program folder, and modify any shortcuts.

    2. Plug in the key and install HL-Server on the service computer - this provides the service for the client computers to access the key. The key and service can be placed on any computer in the network - it does not have to be a server, but should be always connected and running. Run \other_files\hlsw32.exe to install the service. [download, Sep-07, 5.85MB]

    3. To monitor network key usage, install Aladdin Monitor on any computer in the network - run \other_files\aksmon32.exe. [download, May-07, 1.68MB]

    4. Start HL-Server on the service computer, either from one of the batch files or from the Aladdin Monitor.

      • Place the supplied batch files in the same folder as the HL-Server software, and run a batch file to start or stop the service: e.g. hls-24hr.bat will set a 24 hour timeout, and hls-remove.bat will stop the service. Modify the files for different timeouts (in seconds) if desired.

        hls-24hr.bat

        @echo     * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
        @echo     * Starting HL-Server with 24 hour timeout *
        @echo     * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
        @echo.
        echo Installing HL-Server service with 24 hour timeout
        hls32svc -install
        hls32svc -start
        hls32cmd -add 17317
        hls32cmd -timeout 86400
        @echo.
        @pause

        hls-remove.bat

        @echo     * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
        @echo     * Stop and remove HL-Server *
        @echo     * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
        @echo.
        hls32svc -stop
        hls32svc -remove
        @echo.
        @pause

      • The Aladdin Monitor can only be used to start and stop the service if the network key is on the same computer, with only 15 minutes of timeout for an inactive program.
        To start the service from Aladdin Monitor, select /Services-Hardlock-Install, then /Services-Hardlock-Start.

    5. Run \tests\HL_NET-R.exe on any client computer to check access from the computer to the network key.

    To monitor the key from another computer, start the Aladdin Monitor and scan the network (this should happen automatically). Select the computer with the network key, and enter the key’s module address (17317) on the right and click [Add]. Expand the branch for the computer on the tree, and select the key. You can now observe the logins on the right. You can also force the removal of a program login, which will cause the JKSimBlast program to shut-down, with no warning to the user.

    It is possible to use a network key to run JKSimBlast on a single computer, but the computer must be connected to a network. Follow the steps above with the client and server computers as the one computer.

    For additional information, refer to the Hardlock End User’s Manual in the file HL_End_Users_Manual.pdf. [download, Aug-04, 368KB]
